Protection, Kansas
The town of Protection was incorporated in 1909 with the help of the Miller family of fifteen members. The population was not large enough for state standards, until they moved to town. 
 
Protection is a friendly town in the Western part of the county, consisting of about 530 residents. Protection houses most of the industry in the county, with 3 manufacturing businesses.
In Protection you will find the community working together for a common goal. Civic pride led the Protection Beautification Committtee to improve the look of the town. Several pocket parks were created with lots of flowers and plants. In 1996 a group funded and built a new pavilion in the city park by selling commemorative bricks laid in the pathway.

                                          Stan Herd Art Gallery
                                          Protection is especially proud of Artist Stan Herd, a Protection                                             High School graduate of 1968. He has been a busy person      since the last Comanche County History book was published in 1981. Stan is now known worldwide as a “Crop Artist”, using tractors and plantings to create huge murals of EARTH ART in many fields in the area and across the country. Stan is very community minded and has painted murals in each of the three towns in Comanche County. 
Articles on Stan and his artistic work have been featured in more than 40 magazines and hundreds of newspapers; he has also appeared on local, state, and national television programs. In 1999 his hometown honored him with the Stan Herd Art Gallery. It was first located in the northwest room of Don’s Place and was later moved to the Protection Township Library. In the gallery are paintings, drawings, prints, and other memorabilia.
